BetOnSports A No Show In U.S. District Court

This week Marty Woelfle sued an online gambling firm, but no one bothered to show up. That seems to be a good reason why BetOnSports PLC whould hire attorneys. BetOnSports is facing a 22-count charge filed in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis.

The U.S. District Court jailed BetOnSports chief executive and the company is restricted in their operations in the United States.

BetOnSports headquarters is in Costa Rica and the other offices are on the island of Antigua. BetOnSports was advised that it didn't have to respond to the charges filed in a U.S. court.

BetOnSports didn't show up, but it didn't mean that no one is paying attention to the case. Legal experts and industry executives are watching the prosecution in St. Louis.

William Eadington, director of the Institute for the Study of Gambling and Commercial Gaming at the University of Nevada, Reno, said: "This may very well signal that the Justice Department is going to allow the U.S. attorneys to take this issue much more seriously than they have in the past."

If the case against BetOnSports becomes successful, the whole online gaming industry will be having a change in its industry landscape.

U.S. Attorney Catherine Hanaway said that one of the biggest reason why they need to pursue the case against BetOnSports is that U.S. Treasury was like being rob, billions of dollars are flowing out of the United States that escape excise taxes.

"Because the industry is illegal and unregulated and very large amounts of cash are transferred, it has the potential to create other problems," Hanaway said.

Woelfle told Judge Jackson that the restraining order against BetOnSports should be enfroced permanently. Jackson extended the temporary restraining order until August. 14.
